God's Heart for the Orphan, and Our Response

“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families…”
– Psalm 68:5–6
When we open the pages of Scripture, we see a beautiful truth: God has always cared deeply for the orphan. He is not distant from their pain or blind to their needs—He is a Father to the fatherless and a defender of the vulnerable. His heart beats for the child who feels forgotten, the one who longs for a safe place to belong.
At Connected Hearts, these verses in Psalm 68 are more than just words on a page. They're the foundation of everything we do. God has called us to join Him in His mission of placing the lonely in families, whether through adoption or foster care. Every child deserves to experience the love of a family, because family was God’s idea from the beginning.

Maggie Joy’s Story
When the Luallin family heard about a little girl named Maggie Joy in China, she was battling a cancerous brain tumor and facing an uncertain future. They already had four children at home, but God placed Maggie on their hearts. Through the support of generous donors and Connected Hearts, the Luallins raised the funds needed to adopt Maggie Joy. Once home, Maggie received the lifesaving surgery she needed to have the tumor removed. Today, Maggie is cancer-free and surrounded by the love and support of a forever family.
Maggie Joy's life is a testimony that God truly sets the lonely in families. Stories like Maggie’s remind us that orphan care isn’t just about meeting physical needs—it’s about reflecting the heart of God Himself. (Read the full story on our website)

But there’s another layer to this truth: every one of us who has placed our faith in Christ is part of an adoption story. Before Christ, we were spiritually orphaned—lost, wandering, and without hope.

Yet God, in His great mercy, chose us, adopted us into His family, and gave us the right to call Him Abba, Father (Romans 8:15).
When we care for orphans, we are reflecting the very heart of the gospel.
James 1:27 reminds us that true faith includes caring for orphans and widows in their distress. For some, that means adopting. For others, it means fostering, giving financially, or praying faithfully. Every act of obedience matters. Every gift makes a difference.
Thank you for walking with us as we bring hope, healing, and family to children who need it most. Together, we’re showing the world what God’s love looks like.
