Where Does Someone Start if They Feel Called to Adopt?

For many people, adoption begins with a quiet stirring in the heart—a nudge that maybe this is something God is calling them to consider. Orphan care is certainly scriptural, and all Christians are called to care for the fatherless (James 1:27). But that calling looks different for each person. Some may adopt, others may foster, and still others may volunteer their time, pray faithfully, or give financially to support adoptive families. The beautiful truth is that God uses each role to make a lasting difference in the lives of children.

So if you feel called to adopt, where do you start?

1. Start with Prayer

Every adoption journey begins with seeking God’s will. Ask Him to guide your steps, give you clarity, and prepare your heart. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

2. Learn About Your Options

Explore the different types of adoption—domestic, international, and foster-to-adopt. Each has unique requirements and timelines, but all lead to the same beautiful outcome: a child placed in a loving family.

3. Connect with an Agency or Ministry

Adoption agencies and ministries can help you understand the practical steps, from home studies to paperwork. They can also help you discern which path may be best for your family.

4. Count the Cost, but Trust God’s Provision

Yes, adoption is costly—but countless families will testify that God provides in amazing ways. Ministries like Connected Hearts exist to come alongside you, offering financial support, prayer, and encouragement as you step out in faith.

5. Build a Support Network

Adoption is a journey best walked with others. Surround yourself with friends, family, and church members who can pray for you, encourage you, and celebrate with you.

The Bottom Line

Starting an adoption journey can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to have all the answers at the beginning. Take the first step in prayer, learn about the process, and trust that God will lead you each step of the way. And remember, while not everyone is called to adopt, every Christian can answer God’s call to care for orphans in some way.

As one adoptive mom beautifully put it, “We didn’t know how the story would unfold—we just knew we had to say yes.”
